JUMP Math Day in Terrace, BC with Dr. John Mighton and Liz Barrett - in partnership with PIMS (Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences).
JUMP Math is pleased to announce JUMP Math Day in Terrace.
Keynote by Dr John Mighton – “The Myth of Ability!”
This session will be followed by Dr John Mighton guiding you in strategies that aim to develop teacher confidence and encourage relooking at the math so as to develop solid conceptual understanding of the math. Using JUMP Math methods learn how to use strategies to encourage and nurture the problem solver within each child. There will be two breakout sessions in the afternoon:
Grades 1 - 4 Session: Liz Barrett Teacher Support and Outreach for JUMP Math BC. The focus will be developing a solid Mental Math strategy, teaching multiplication and division, math and art ideas and introduction to Fractions
Grades 5 - 8 Session: John Mighton will look at the teaching of Integers, Percentages and Ratio

JUMP Math Training Sessions, Winter 2011-12, British Columbia
JUMP Math is pleased to announce Level 1, Level 2 and Special Education training workshops to be held in British Columbia. More will be added as they are scheduled. The training sessions will be led by JUMP Math Manager of Teacher Support and First Nations Outreach, Liz Barrett. Liz has been working with JUMP Math for many years and has been working with many teachers, parents, tutors, especially in First Nations communities, which is her passion. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about JUMP Math and its effect upon not only students but also teachers and parents. Liz is more than willing to spend time answering your questions and guiding you in the right direction. If you have not yet attended a JUMP Math training session, we strongly recommend that you do so soon. And, if you do not see a workshop at a location and date that fit your needs and would like us to consider adding one, please let us know, as soon as possible, by contacting Noreen McLean (see below for contact information).
Additional Materials Available at a Discount
Participants may order, at the time of workshop registration, one set of grade specific student practice and assessment books at the discounted price of $14 plus GST and one printed, binder-ready version of a grade-specific Teacher Resource package at the discounted price of $65 plus GST. These discounted prices are only available up to one week before the workshop.
How to Reach and Teach Every Child (Level 1)
Focus Audience: Teachers of Grades 1–8, Learning Assistance Specialists, and EAs with little or no experience with JUMP Math.
JUMP Math’s Professional Development (PD) session is designed to give you the tools and skills to effectively implement the program in your classroom or school. In this workshop participants will:
- Learn about the JUMP Math program, its philosophy and development
- Examine their own comfort levels with mathematics and mathematics teaching
- Discuss the importance of teachers' mathematical knowledge
- Observe and critique a JUMP Math lesson
- Become familiar with JUMP Math's teacher and student materials
- Learn about anticipating ‘pitfalls’, task analysis and other JUMP Math teaching strategies
- Discuss practical strategies
- Have opportunities to share ideas and network with colleagues

Taking it to the Next Level (Level 2)
Focus Audience: Teachers of Grades 1–8, Learning Assistance Specialists, and EAs who have a good grounding in the basics of JUMP Math and wish to take their practice to the next level.
This JUMP Math Professional Development (PD) session focuses on how to get the most out of the JUMP Math Program and take it to the next level. You will be guided through the art of scaffolding difficult concepts in math teaching. We will look at how to dvelop bonus questions/challenging students who finish quickly. We will examine teaching strategies and games that will help you in developing solid problem solving skills in young people. In this workshop participants will:
- Thoroughly examine JUMP Principles in order to maximize their effectiveness in your educational setting
- Expand on your knowledge of problem-solving in mathematics, and learn about the JUMP approach to teaching effective problem-solving strategies to your students
- Guide you through the art of scaffolding difficult concepts in mathematics instruction
- Learn how to increase your student’s mathematical vocabulary and to make math relevant
- Explore the use of guided practice and guided discovery.
- Look at how to develop bonus questions that challenge students who finish quickly.
Share tips on
- Using the Teacher's Guide and website effectively
- Which topics to focus on more if time is short to complete the workbooks
- Teaching combined-grade classes (how to align the books/teach to both grades in the same lesson
